Do AI Tools Think Like Us? An Expert Weighs In — illustrative image

There's a lot of talk lately about whether AI — that's Artificial Intelligence — might be becoming conscious, or even 'thinking' like us. It's a big, fascinating question, especially as AI tools become more powerful and seem to hold clever conversations or even write compelling stories.

However, a well-respected science fiction author, Ted Chiang, offers a different perspective on this. He argues that what we're seeing from AI companies like Anthropic, (who create advanced AI models like Claude) isn't really consciousness. Instead, he suggests these companies are very good at 'anthropomorphism' — that's a fancy way of saying we're giving human qualities or feelings to something that isn't human, like a computer program.

Chiang points out that when an AI system appears to 'understand' or 'reason,' it's often actually just following incredibly complex patterns and rules in the data it was trained on. It doesn't have emotions, personal experiences, or a sense of self in the way humans do. It's more like a very sophisticated calculator or a brilliant mimic, good at predicting the next word in a sentence to sound human, but not actually 'thinking' or 'feeling' what it's saying.

This distinction is important. If we mistake AI's clever tricks for genuine consciousness, we might start to expect too much from these tools, or even misunderstand their limitations and potential risks. For small business owners or parents, understanding this helps us make better decisions about how we use AI in our daily lives and workplaces. It reminds us that while AI is a powerful tool, it's still a tool, and it doesn't replace human judgement or genuine human connection.

Why it matters

Understanding if AI is truly 'thinking' helps everyday Australians, from workers to small business owners, make realistic decisions about using these new tools. It helps manage expectations and navigate the hype, ensuring we use AI effectively without overestimating its human-like capabilities.
