Our governments are keeping a close eye on new types of fraud, and they're waving a cautionary flag about something called 'AI-driven identity fraud'. This isn't just about tricky emails anymore. It’s about sophisticated fakes made using artificial intelligence — think very convincing fake voices, fake faces, or even whole fake identities. These clever fakes, sometimes called 'deepfakes' or 'synthetic identities', are becoming a real headache for banks and financial companies, and for everyday Aussies too.

Basically, criminals are using AI to create these fakes to try and fool the systems that check who you are when you open an account or make a transaction. Imagine an AI so smart it can mimic your voice perfectly, or create a photo of someone who doesn't exist but looks completely real. These tools are being used to try and get past digital security.

The good news is that authorities are onto it. They're telling banks and financial technology (fintech) companies to step up their game. This means better security when you're setting up a new account online, and better ways to spot a scam before it hurts you. For us, it’s a reminder to be extra vigilant, even with things that seem real. Always double-check requests for personal information.

For small business owners, this is particularly important. Ensuring your business’s financial systems are robust and educating your staff about these more advanced fraud tactics could save you a lot of grief. While the banks are working hard, an extra layer of awareness from individuals and businesses is our best defence against these evolving AI scams.
