We've all seen AI popping up more and more in our daily lives, and it seems our shopping habits are no exception. A recent study out of the UK gives us a peek into how people are now using artificial intelligence to find products online, and what they think about the suggestions these smart systems make.

It turns out a fair chunk of shoppers, about one in five, are now turning to AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini to kick off their product searches. This is a bit of a shift, as these AI assistants are now even more popular for discovery than social media sites, which used to be a go-to spot for finding new stuff. It suggests people are getting comfortable asking AI directly for ideas and information when they're looking to buy.

However, it's not all smooth sailing for AI in the shopping world. While many are using it to find products, there's still a noticeable hesitation when it comes to fully trusting its recommendations. The study highlighted that even though 55% of UK shoppers had bought something based on an AI suggestion, these recommendations aren't actually translating into a big boost in sales overall. It seems people are happy to get ideas, but they're still likely to do their own research or rely on other factors before hitting the 'buy' button.

For Aussie small business owners, this is an interesting insight. It tells us that customers are open to using AI for discovery, so having a presence where AI can find your products and services is becoming more important. But it also reinforces that the human element of trust, quality, and good old-fashioned customer service remains absolutely crucial. AI can start the conversation, but building that lasting relationship still comes down to your business and its reputation, not just a computer's suggestion.

Why it matters

For small business owners, this shows AI is a growing way customers discover products, so it's worth considering. But it also highlights that genuine trust and quality service are still the main drivers for customers actually buying and coming back, even with new tech in play.
