Google's AI Brain Gets a New Top Scientist
Big news from Google's AI division, DeepMind, which is responsible for much of the cutting-edge artificial intelligence we hear about. Demis Hassabis, a co-founder and a very influential figure in the world of AI, is stepping back from the day-to-day running of DeepMind.
He's taking on two new, very important roles: Chair of Google DeepMind and Chief Scientist of Alphabet. Alphabet is the big company that owns Google, so this new Chief Scientist role means he'll be looking at AI across all of Google's many projects. Think of it like a highly experienced coach moving from managing a team on the field every day to overseeing the entire club's strategy from a higher vantage point.
What this means is that Hassabis will be focusing more on the big picture – specifically, on something called AGI, or Artificial General Intelligence. This is the idea of AI that can do pretty much anything a human brain can do, rather than just specialising in one task. He'll also be deeply involved in scientific research and guiding how AI develops responsibly, which is crucial for how these powerful technologies are used in the future.
While he moves to these strategic roles, Koray Kavukcuoglu will be stepping up to lead DeepMind's daily operations. For us ordinary folk, this shift signals that Google is very serious about pushing the boundaries of AI, but also about ensuring it's developed thoughtfully. It's less about immediate changes to the AI tools we use today and more about setting the course for the really advanced AI that's still on the horizon.
Why it matters
This leadership change influences how future AI, from smart assistants to business tools, will be designed and implemented. It sets the direction for technology that could impact how every Australian works, learns, and lives in the coming years.
