Robots Could Soon Learn New Tasks Much Faster
Google DeepMind, their advanced AI research arm, has unveiled something pretty clever called Gemini Robotics 2. Imagine a robot brain that's smart enough to control different robot bodies without needing to be completely reprogrammed each time. That's essentially what this new system aims to do.
Traditionally, if you had a robot arm to pack boxes and then wanted to use the same AI 'brain' for a robot on wheels to deliver them, you'd usually have to start almost from scratch. It's like having to teach a person to drive a new car model even if they already know how to drive.
Gemini Robotics 2 changes this. It's designed to be a more universal brain. This means a robot could theoretically 'swap' its body – maybe going from a wheeled base to a robotic arm – and still understand how to perform its job with minimal new training. Google says it only needs a small handful of examples, fewer than 200, to adapt to entirely new robot hardware.
For Aussie small businesses, this could be a game-changer down the track. Instead of needing highly specialised and expensive robots for every single task, you might eventually have a more flexible system. A robot could be a packer one day and an inventory checker the next, just by changing its physical parts.
