Google co-founder Sergey Brin, one of the brains behind the tech giant, recently shared some interesting thoughts on how artificial intelligence (AI) might change our jobs. Instead of seeing AI as a threat that will take over human roles, he believes it could actually help us perform better and reach new levels in our work.

He uses the game of Go to explain his point. Go is a very complex board game, and when Google's AI, AlphaGo, beat the world's best players, it didn't mean the end for human Go players. In fact, it pushed them to study the AI's strategies, learn new moves, and ultimately, become even better players themselves. Brin suggests that AI could do the same for various professions — by showing us new ways of working and challenging us to improve.

This isn't to say AI won't change things. Some repetitive tasks are very likely to be automated. But Brin's perspective offers a more optimistic view, focusing on how AI can be a tool for enhancement rather than outright replacement. It encourages workers and business owners to think about how they can use AI to elevate their skills and creativity, rather than fearing it.

For Aussie small businesses, this could mean looking at AI not just as a cost-cutting measure, but as a way to innovate service offerings or improve staff capabilities. Imagine an AI helping a real estate agent analyse market trends faster, allowing them more time to build client relationships, or a graphic designer using AI tools to quickly generate ideas, freeing them up for more complex creative work. It's about working *with* AI, not against it.

Why it matters

For everyday Australians, especially small business owners and workers, this means thinking about AI as a partner for growth, not simply a job stealer. It encourages us to look at how we can use new technologies to upskill and innovate.
