There's a new type of AI tool popping up that might be quite interesting for Aussies who like to keep their data close to home. It's called 'Vyrii', and it's a web interface — basically a user-friendly screen you can open in your browser — that lets you run various AI assistants right on your own computer. Think of it like having your very own ChatGPT or Google Bard, but instead of sending your information off to a big company's servers, everything stays stored locally on your machine.

This is a big deal for privacy. When you use tools like ChatGPT, your conversations and any documents you upload are typically sent to the company's data centres. With Vyrii, because it's 'local', your sensitive business plans, personal notes, or family photos remain entirely within your control. It means you can use AI for things like drafting emails, summarising documents, or even helping with web research, without worrying about your data being shared or used for other purposes.

Vyrii works with what are called 'Ollama' models or any 'OpenAI-compatible backend'. In simple terms, these are the actual AI brains that do the thinking and generating. Ollama is a program that makes it easy to run these AI brains on your own computer, and Vyrii acts as the friendly face you interact with. It can help with things like chatting, translating text, doing web research, generating documents, and even managing files.

While it sounds a bit technical, the aim of tools like Vyrii is to make powerful AI more accessible and private for everyday users. It's still early days – this version is only 0.1.3, meaning it's quite new and might have a few kinks to iron out. But the appeal of having a private, powerful AI helper at your fingertips without giving up your data is a strong one for many, whether you're a small business owner handling sensitive client information or a parent organising family documents.

Why it matters

For small business owners and everyday Australians, this means you can use powerful AI assistance for tasks like drafting sensitive documents or researching personal information, all while keeping your data absolutely private and under your own control. It offers a new level of security for your digital life.
